A case report of a white François Langur in the Guangxi Encheng National Nature Reserve, China

  • Pelage color serves critical functions in mammals, including concealment, intraspecific communication and social interaction. A rare white female Francois’ langur was observed in the Guangxi Encheng National Natural Reserve, China. Her coloration presents a stark contrast to the black pelage of other group members and the forest environment, making her more conspicuous. Observational data confirm that she has white hair, pink skin, and black eyes with pigmentation in fingers and nails. She has successfully bred three offspring with normal coloration for the species. Data available suggests this individual exhibits leucism rather than albinism. Ongoing behavioral observations indicate a preference for concealed positions. Further study on her social interactions, foraging, and ranging behavior is ongoing to better explore her behavioral and ecological adaptation strategies.
